FarbenWhy natural colours?

What is the difference between natural and synthetic dyes?

Most of the dyeing plants contain more than just one dyestuff, which means that the colours obtained with natural dyes are combined colours. Because they have common shares they often go so well together.

The aim of the dyer who works with natural dyes is to create even, bright and pure colours, a goal that can easily be reached by dyeing with synthetic dyes. Yet the traditional dyeing methods have to deal with many individual factors that cannot be standardized, however hard one may try. Not only the plants or the insects are individuals with subtly varying characteristics, it is also the water, which is used, the soil, and the climatic conditions where the dyestuffs grow, and of course the dyers skill and personality that are expressed in the final result.

In fact it is precisely this perfection that can never be reached because of the inevitable imprint of individuality that creates the uniqueness and the vibrant vitality of natural dyes.
